Peoria, AZ History and Background
Peoria is located in Maricopa County, Arizona, with a small portion in Yavapai County. Peoria is considered a major suburb of Phoenix. According to the 2006 Census Bureau estimates, Peoria's population is 142,024. Peoria is currently the fourth largest city in Arizona comparing land area, and the ninth largest city in AZ comparing population. Peoria got it's name from Peoria, Illinois. ( “Peoria” is a corruption of the Illini Indian word for “raging prairie fire.”) Peoria hosts the spring training home of the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners who share the Peoria Sports Complex.
Peoria, AZ was established in the 1880’s by William J. Murphy. Murphy's vision of fertile farm lands fed by water from the Salt River became reality with the completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885. When the canal was completed, Murphy headed East to interest people in settling in this new community with excellent weather. Possibility and great weather captured people’s attention – over 5,000 acres of land in the new district was purchased by residents of Peoria, Illinois. Four families from Peoria, Illinois were among the first to relocate to Arizona. Peoria, Arizona has been created and the rest is history...
Residences in the new and upcoming community started to file in once a school and post office were established in 1889. More people relocated to Peoria, AZ as Peoria continued to grow as a farming community. The farmlands were rich in soil and people were making a good living.
Peoria, AZ incorporated in 1954, with boundaries covering only one square mile of land. The warm climate of Peoria continued to attract people, and still does to this day. Peoria has invested heavily in the Peoria Sports Complex and continues to subsidize its operations each year. The stadium is a draw for many tourists, concerts, weddings, business events, boat tours, and festivals. These events keep the restaurants and hotels in the area full of business. The stadium helped make the 83rd Avenue and Bell/Arrowhead Fountains center into a restaurant mecca of the West Valley. This area is said to have more restaurant's in a quarter mile then any other similar area in the U.S. The Peoria Sports Complex has more than paid for itself economically. Alot of the land around the complex is owned by the City of Peoria and the selling of the land has increased city revenue and ensures the quality of the life for the area and Peoria residents
